Dr. Nicholas B. DuVall graduated from The Ohio State University in 2004 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.  Dr. DuVall then completed a one-year AEGD residency at Travis AFB, CA in 2005 and a hospital-based GPR at The Ohio State University in 2008. Following a short private practice career, Dr. DuVall completed a two-year AEGD residency at Lackland AFB, TX in 2012 and also received a Master of Science degree from the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD.  As the deputy program director of the two-year AEGD residency at Keesler AFB, MS until 2017, Dr. DuVall mentored and published multiple CAD/CAM research manuscripts.  Dr. DuVall remains actively involved in CAD/CAM and material research while also a peer-reviewer for Operative Dentistry.  Dr. DuVall was Commander of the Dental Squadron, Offutt AFB, NE  and is currently a Professor of Comprehensive Dentistry, Uniformed Services University; Air Force member of the Uniformed Services University Committee on Appointments and Promotions; Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General for AEGD; and Program Director, AEGD-1, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.

Dr. Deidra McLean graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1996 with a degree in Biology and in 2000 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. In 1998, she joined the Canadian Armed Forces’ Dental Officer Training Program and following graduation, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2002 for six months as part of Canada’s contribution to the War on Terrorism. In 2013, Dr. McLean completed a two-year AEGD program at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and also earned a Masters in Science from the Uniformed Services University. She became a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry in 2014. In 2017, she earned a Master’s of Defence Studies in Global Health Engagement from the Royal Military College. Dr. McLean served as a Deputy Board Examiner in 2015, 2018, and 2019 and was appointed as a Director in Fall 2019. Dr. McLean is currently the Dental Detachment Commander at CFB Esquimalt in Victoria, British Columbia.

Dr George Holzer spent most of his early life just north of Pittsburgh, PA. He attended he University of Pittsburgh for under-graduate study and the West Virginia University School of Dentistry graduating in 1988 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Dr. Holzer is Board Certified by the American Board of General Dentistry and holds the rank of Master in the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr Holzer has wanted to be a dentist for as long as he remembers and still has a passion for practicing dentistry. Following dental school, Dr Holzer worked in 2 practices near Pittsburgh for over two years. He then joined the United States Army Dental Corps where he served for over 24 years. He practiced and served in multiple locations including Germany (twice), Japan and the Pentagon. Doctor Holzer completed a 2-Year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at Fort Bragg, NC. He concluded his Army career by Directing the 12-Month Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. Following retirement from the Army, Dr Holzer worked in the Veteran’s Health Administration’s Walla Walla, WA Dental Clinic, a practice in Puyallup, WA specializing in dentures and implants and starting a General Practice Dentistry residency in Olympia, WA. Dr. Holzer has a commitment to quality and education. He loves to impart knowledge to patients, staff and fellow dentists while learning from the as well. In his spare time, Doc loves spending time with his wife of over 30 years, attending concerts, Broadway shows, NASCAR races and travelling. Dr Holzer joined Aspen Dental as a float dentist throughout the state of Tennessee. This will allow Dr. Holzer the ability to see many parts of the beautiful state while providing coverage and improved access to care to areas and patients in need.

Dr. MacPherson served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 36 years; as a Combat Arms officer in the Canadian Army for 23 years, and a Dental officer for 13 years.  His undergraduate education was through the Royal Military College of Canada and the University of Texas at El Paso, and he graduated Dental School from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, at the University of Western Ontario.  He completed a 2-year AEGD residency with the US Army at Fort Hood in Texas, and a Master of Science in Oral Biology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.  His last assignment in the Canadian Armed Forces was Chief Instructor (Associate Dean of Academics) at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre, where he oversaw medical and dental education for the Canadian military.

Dr. MacPherson is a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and an AEGD Program Site Visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation.  He currently serves as the AEGD Program Director at East Carolina University, where he has had the privilege to have trained over 125 AEGD Residents since January 2018.  He has a passion for mentoring and developing Comprehensive General Dentists, who are clinically skilled, competent, and dedicated to delivering the full spectrum of oral healthcare needs for their patients, and who will serve as the next generation of clinicians, leaders, and future educators for the profession of Dentistry.

Dr. Toni Bowden graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Petroleum Refining Engineering.  She later attained her Doctor of Dental Surgery from Meharry Medical College in 2000, followed by her commissioning into the U.S. Navy that same year.  She completed a one-year GPR at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia. 

In June 2008, Dr. Bowden earned a certificate in Comprehensive Dentistry from Naval Postgraduate Dental School, Bethesda, along with a Master in Science degree in Oral Health Sciences from George Washington University.  She achieved board certification from ABGD in 2010, Fellowship in the International College of Dentists in 2018, Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2020, and Fellowship in the American College of Dentists in 2022.

She served as an examiner from 2020-2022 before joining the Board of Directors. 

Dr. Bowden presently holds the position of Senior Dental Department Head at the Branch Health Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Rogers was born in Johnson City, TN, and was raised in the small town of Big Stone Gap in Southwest Virginia. He enlisted in the Navy in August 1995. While in service, he obtained a BS degree in Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. He was awarded a full scholarship from the Health Professions Scholarship Program to attend the University of Kentucky, College Of Dentistry.

Dr. Rogers achieved his Doctorate of Dental Medicine in May 2008. He reported to the 1st Dental Battalion at Camp Pendleton, CA as an AEGD resident. In July 2012, Dr. Rogers received his certificate in Comprehensive Dentistry and a Master’s degree in Oral Biology from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School and USUHS.

Dr. Rogers is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and became a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry (ABGD) in 2014. Before retiring from the Navy in 2019, He served as the Specialty Leader for Clinical Digital Dentistry.

Dr. Rogers is currently serving as Department Head of digital dentistry and mentor to the GPR program at the Washington DC, VA Medical Center. He is married to fellow Navy Comprehensive Dentist CAPT(ret) Thu Luu. They share 2 children, Jaden(17) and Caitlin(14).

Dr. Ross K. Oates graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 2012. Dr. Oates then completed a two-year General Practice Residency at the University of Virginia in 2014 where he served as chief resident. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry in 2015, the same year he began his seven-year service in the United States Air Force. Dr. Oates served as a Deputy Board Examiner in 2016, 2017, 2022, and 2024 and was appointed as a Director in Fall 2024. Dr. Oates has also been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Oates is a native of Kentucky, where he currently owns and operates a private practice in Fort Thomas, Ky.

Dr. Doris Lam is a native of Brooklyn, New York.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from New York University in 2005.  Two years later, she started serving in the U.S. Navy.  In 2009, she received her DMD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.  She completed her GPR at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia. In 2014, Dr. Lam deployed to Djibouti, Africa. 

She successfully completed a 2-year AEGD from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School at Bethesda, MD, receiving her Masters of Science in Oral Biology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2017.  She became a Fellow with the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) in 2018.  Dr. Lam has lectured nationally at the Academy of General Dentistry Fellowship review courses in 2018 and 2019 and volunteered as Fellowship review course director in 2018.  Dr. Lam attained her board certification with the American Board of General Dentistry (ABGD) in 2019.  She had the honor of serving as a deputy examiner in 2021 and 2023. 

Dr. Lam won second place in a 2018 national AGD poster contest for her team’s pilot research on the use of therapy dogs to study adult dental anxiety.  She proudly published in General Dentistry on “The Effects of a therapy dog intervention on dental fear and anxiety in adult patients undergoing dental procedures: a pilot study” in 2024.

Dr. John Safar graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a B.S. degree in biology in 1987.  He received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1991.  Dr. Safar later earned his certificate of residency for completing the two-year Advanced Comprehensive General Dentistry Program at Keesler AFB, MS in 1998. He achieved board certification from ABGD in 2000, and Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2015. Dr. Safar has served as an AEGD-1 Program Director at Scott AFB, IL and at Nellis AFB, NV then as Residency Director for the AEGD-2 program at Lackland AFB, TX. He presently holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX.
